OUR SETTING
Hampton is located in Southeastern Virginia on a peninsula it shares with Newport News, Williamsburg, Poquoson, York County, and James City County. It is part of the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Statistical Area which is made up of nine cities, including Virginia Beach and Norfolk, and five counties. The population of the area is 1.5 million. The "Peninsula" and "Southside" are connected by the James River Bridge, the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel, and the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel.
Founded in 1610, Hampton is the oldest continuous English-speaking settlement in America. Seafood was the first industry in Hampton and continues to thrive, but has been replaced in economic importance by military and space related agencies. Hampton is home to Langley Air Force Base, Fort Monroe and the National Aeronautic and Space Administration's Langley Research Center. With a population of about 146,000, the city's location has the advantage of being midway between two Hampton Roads tourism meccas -- Williamsburg and Virginia Beach.
Hampton has been named a 2002 All-America City. The first free school in America was in Hampton, and the city still gives public education high priority. There are 24 elementary schools. 6 middle schools, and 4 high schools. Within the city is Hampton University and Thomas Nelson Community College. Four-year state colleges within an hour's drive are the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University in Norfolk, and Christopher Newport University in Newport News. Regent University, Virginia Wesleyan College, and the Eastern Virginia Medical School are also in the area.
